Homer Junior Smith

Homer Junior Smith, 69, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 from complications of Alzheimers. His wife, Loretta and daughter Natalie were with him as he past away.

He was born in Richmond, Calif. on Feb. 12, 1944 to Homer and Myrtle Smith. His family came to Lakeview when Homer was in grade school.

Homer graduated from Lakeview High School in the class of 1962. Homer was a gifted athlete and played on the football, basketball, track and baseball teams. Baseball was his passion. He played on the first Little League team organized in Lakeview and then played Babe Ruth and was selected to an all star team. He played for two years on Lakeview’s American Legion team.

Homer married his high school sweet heart Loretta Jones on Jan. 11, 1963. They were married for 50 years and had two children.

Homer and Loretta moved to Milwaukie and Homer at first worked for his brother-in-law, Floyd Jones, in the Service Station business and then bought his own station. He sold his station after 15 years and went work as a material service technician for Kaiser Hospital System and Providence Hospital until retirement.

He loved to return to Lakeview to fish in Deep Creek and hunt for deer.

Homer was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth, his father Homer and mother Myrtle.

He is survived by his wife Loretta, son Tracy Smith, daughter and son-in-law Natalie and Aaron Beene; grandchildren Tyme and Dolcee Beene; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Floyd Jones and Norma Jewel Jones and Bob Jones and Billie Jones.

Jo Ann Edwards

Jo Ann J. Edwards, 75, went home to heaven at the Lake District Hospital in Lakeview Thursday, Feb. 7, 2014 following a  brief illness.

She was born Aug. 9, 1938 in New England, N.D. to William and Magdalene (Bambusch)  Honeymann.

She was married to Billy G. Edwards of Lakeview.  She was a graduate of St. Mary’s high school in New England, N.D.  She was an employee of Woodgrain Moulding Plant for over 35 years, retiring in 2007 and was named employee of the year in 1983.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing and just being with her family and friends.  She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge and The VFW.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Billy.

Survivors include her son, Steven D. Carter of Klamath Falls, daughter and son-in-law Rayma Jean and Thomas Byrd of Virginia Beach, Va., two brothers and six sisters; grandchildren and their spouses, Tyler and Jackie Carter,  Brittania and Ryan Welch, all of Klamath Falls; Thomas R. and Christina Byrd of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jessica and Tray Swann of Lagrange, Ga. and six great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved.  She is also survived by two very special friends, Dave Kenney and Bill Brain.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.  The burial followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Pauline Lukl

Pauline Lukl, 89, died at her retirement center home in Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014. She was born to Jesse and Rosella (Orbison) Ross in Cambridge, Kan. on Nov. 24, 1924 and was the youngest of six children.

She attended two years of high school in Lakeview, where she met her future husband and life long Lake County resident, Ed Lukl. They were married in 1945, celebrating their 61st anniversary before his death in 2006. She lived in Lakeview until 2009 when she moved to Salem to be near her daughters.

Besides raising four children, Pauline worked as a library assistant and office secretary at Lakeview High School. She also worked for Judge Foster as his secretary and was a court recorder.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, charter member of the Clipper Club and more recently a member of the Nazarene Church of Lakeview. She enjoyed baking, rock collecting, crafts, fishing, growing flowers, singing, reading and studying her Bible and spending time at the family cabin in the South Warners.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; siblings and husband.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Jenna Lukl of Shingletown, Calif., daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Clark Blanchard of Salem, Carol and Mike Ruda of Jefferson, and Phyllis and Bob Routt of La Grande; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with interment in the Sunset Park Cemetery followed by a potluck lunch at The Gathering Place.

Charlotte Marie Hill

Charlotte Marie Hill, 68, of Lakeview, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014.  She was born on July 21, 1945 in Red Bluff, Calif. to Lesley and Marjorie (Taylor) Bone and graduated from Crater High School.  She married Donald Dean Hill on March 19, 1964 in Adel.

In addition to being a homemaker, Charlotte was a ranch cook for many years in Adel at the MC Ranch, a bus-driver for Adel school, worked at the Adel and Hart Mountain stores and was a custodian at the District #7 School Building.  She also cleaned homes for people in Lakeview following her retirement from the school district.  She also found time to coach girls softball and was a 4H leader for cooking and leather crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, her husband Donald Hill, her brother and two sisters.

She is survived by her son Buckley Hill of Oklahoma City, Okla., daughter and son-in-law Sue and Jeremy Coffey of Lakeview; sister Rose Kaupanger of Council, Idaho; several nieces, nephews and cousins and was a very loving grandmother to her grandson Levi.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at Ousley Osterman Huffstutter Funeral Chapel in Lakeview followed by a potluck at the Eagles Lodge.  Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at the Adel Cemetery.  Contributions in memory of Charlotte may be made to the charity of your choice.

Melvin J. Young

Melvin J. Young, 83, of Lakeview, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.  He was born on Oct. 5, 1930 in Klamath Falls to George and Phoebe (Coffer) Young.

Mel served in the US Army during the Korean War.  He married Jeanette Mae McNair on Feb. 10, 1952.

Mel worked and managed Lakeview Lockers, was a State Brand Inspector for livestock and was a millwright for many years before he retired from Fremont Saw Mill.  He was a member of the Lakeview Assembly of God Church and was active in VFW Post 4070.  Mel loved rodeos, hunting, branding and time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette on Dec. 27, 1985, parents, and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin J. Young, Jr. and Michelle Young of Corning, Calif., and Ray and Debbie Young of Lakeview; daughter Connie Havely of Klamath Falls; and daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Eric Erickson of Sweet Home; brother and sister-in-law Bert and Toxie Young of Lakeview and brother Robert North of Gresham; sisters Carmen Wilson of Ashland and Loretta Simpson of Medford and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at the Lake County Fairgrounds in the Exhibit Hall with interment at Westside Cemetery and a potluck/luncheon at VFW Post 4070.

Donations may be made in Mel’s name as contributions to VFW Post 4070.

Richard “Dick” Leonard Theall

Richard “Dick” Leonard Theall, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014.  He was born on Jan. 13, 1925 to John and Belle (Love) Theall in Richmond, Calif.

He spent his youth in Tracy, Calif.  He graduated from Tracy High School in 1943, then joined the U. S. Marines and served as a tank operator. He was also a Sharpshooter Rifle instructor on San Clemente Island, then went to the South Pacific on Guadacanal. His tank division was in Tsingtao, China when the Japanese surrendered ending the war in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1946.

He met his sweetheart Margaret Knutzen in Tracy, Calif. with the help of his sisters. They were soon married on Oct. 26, 1947, at the Methodist Church in Tracy. They had two children, Ronald and Julie. They moved from Tracy to Gardnerville, Nev. in 1954. There, Dick worked in the Minden Creamery for 10 years. He moved the family one more time to Lakeview. He worked as a rancher for Jess Roberts, and later leased the ranch from Jess when he retired. Dick continued ranching until he retired in 1996.

His favorite past-time was spending time with his grandchildren. He taught them to hunt, fish, work hard, haul bales, irrigate, drive trucks, tractors and cars, how to be a caring, loving and honest person. He loved to tease them as well. He always had a smile to share and a good story to go along with it.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all four sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret (Knutzen) Theall; son, Ronald Theall, daughter and son-in-law Julie and Rich Ladd; grandchildren Shannon Theall, Shane Theall and wife Kimberly, Marissa (Theall) Russell and husband Chris, Edie Lynn Allen Robertson and husband Daniel; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous close friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 with a potluck celebration at the Westside Grange following the services. Private interment by the family will follow.

Donations may be made to the local VFW, Home Health/Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Maurice (Morey) Graves Emery

Maurice (Morey) Graves Emery, 97, was born June 2, 1916 in Silver Lake and passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at Hospice House in Bend. His parents were Everett (Slivers) A. Emery and Esther Graves Emery Franks, both members of early day Lake County families.

Maurice was the eldest of three boys and spent his early life at the family ranch at Silver Lake. After graduating high school, he attended Adcox School in Portland and later OIT in Klamath Falls taking classes in welding, automotive and aircraft structure.

In 1941 he went to work for the Budd Manufacturing Co. in Philadelphia, Pa. There he met Vivian Smith and they were married Sept. 17, 1949. They adopted a daughter, Beryll Lea, in December 1949. Shortly after, Maurice took a job at the Douglas Aircraft Co. in Torrance, Calif. Around 1960 he retired from the aircraft industry and he and his family moved to Corning, Calif. where he worked in construction. He was active in the Corning Chamber of Commerce and was a city councilman for many years. He was also a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.

After Vivian’s death in 1980, he bought a travel trailer and toured the entire country, including driving to Alaska. In 1993 he married Mary Lou Grade. They made their home in Wickenburg, Ariz. from 1995 until they moved to Klamath Falls in 2009.

He was predeceased by both wives, his parents, brothers Dale and Kenneth Emery and daughter.

He is survived by two nieces, Zelda Emery Monical of Montague, Calif., Cherri Emery Faust of Burney, Calif., nephew Bruce Emery, his wife Penny and sons Kyle and Trent, Silver Lake, and a special friend, Maggie Jeans of Bend. He also leaves numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Margaret Sue “Maggy” Brickey

Margaret Sue “Maggy” Brickey, 66, of Brookings, a longtime caregiver and former owner/operator of an adult foster home in Baker City, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Brookings after her third battle with cancer.

Mrs. Brickey was born May 18, 1947, in Redlands, Calif., to William John and Helen Mae Martin Derksen. She grew up in Beaumont, Calif., and attended school there through her junior year. She graduated in 1965 from Brethren Christian High School in Los Angeles, Calif.

Soon after, she married Clare Frederick Hoover with whom she had three sons. They later divorced. She began her care-giving career at Benedictine Nursing Center in Mount Angel. She later was a private caregiver in John Day and moved to Baker City in the late 1980s, where she and the late Ruth Ritch established Birchwood Adult Foster Home.

On Sept. 29, 1990, she married Dean Brickey, whom she met in a singles Sunday school class at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene. The foster home partnership dissolved and she closed the business in 1999. The Brickeys moved to property at Sparta, where they lived until 2006. They were members of the New Bridge Church of the Nazarene until moving to Hermiston for Dean’s newspaper work. They then transferred their membership to the Hermiston Church of the Nazarene.

The Brickeys sold their Hermiston home after Dean’s retirement in 2011 and joined RVs On A Mission, a lay ministry of the Church of the Nazarene that involves building, maintenance, disaster relief and compassionate ministries at Nazarene churches and campgrounds throughout the nation. They lived in an RV, traveled and worked in Oregon, California and Arizona before her health declined in 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, George William Derksen, and sister Helen Mary McNees.

Survivors include her husband, Dean of Brookings, sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lesa Hoover, Daniel and Crystal Hoover of Brookings; Michael and Katie Hoover of The Dalles; a step-son and his wife, Todd and Jenny Brickey, and a stepdaughter, Kati Brickey, all of Springfield; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family has scheduled a celebration of life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Brookings Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Ave., Brookings, with Pastor Mike Allen officiating. The family and friends will provide a meal afterward in the church’s fellowship hall. Interment of her cremains will be later in a family plot at the New Pine Creek Cemetery, New Pine Creek.

Robert “Bob” Powers

Robert “Bob” Powers,81, passed away quietly at home in Coquille surrounded by family and friends.  He was born May 10, 1932, in Neenah, Wis.

In his life Bob was a preacher for the Church of Christ working mainly for small congregations and doing building construction to supplement their income.  Bob loved singing especially with the barbershop chorus.  He was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved to hunt and fish and loved the beauty in nature.

Bob lived in Lakeview in the late fifties and early sixties, moving here to work as a carpenter building homes for the uranium workers families.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jack Powers and Mabel Franklin, as well as beloved daughter Joan Zacher.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Billie, sons Paul Powers of Lakeview; Mike Powers of Boise, Idaho; Bobbi Wendelin of Blue Springs, Mo; daughters Jeannie Brittell of Lakeview;  Maria Sanders of Nampa, Idaha; brother Mike Powers of Prineville, sisters Colleen Cox of Central Point; Patty Burres of Irrigon;  and 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 in Coquille.

Vivian Springer

Vivian Springer,84, died at her adult foster care home in Portland on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. She was born to Guy and Goldie (Baker) Chitwood in Ellington, Miss. on Jan. 13, 1930.

As a child she moved with her family to Bly, where she would meet and fall in love with Charles Springer. They were married in Bly on Sept. 23, 1945. During their married life they lived in California, Idaho, New Mexico and Arizona before coming back to Oregon where they settled in Lakeview in 1968 to finish raising their family.

Vivian was an avid gardener and loved working in her yard and garden. She and her husband were long time active members of the Lakeview Trinity Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Charles; infant daughter, Janet and step-son, Thomas.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Linda Springer of Redmond, Dan and Donna Springer of Vancouver, Wash., Dave and Amy Springer of La Center, Wash. and Mike and Vickie Springer of Portland; sons, John Springer and Paul Springer of Lakeview; step-son Charles Springer of Medicine Lakes, Wash.; step-daughter Charlotte Chitwood of Cambridge, Idaho and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Lakeview Trinity Baptist Church on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. followed by committal in the Sunset Park Cemetery. A potluck dinner will be shared in the Church Fellowship Hall following the services.

Jay Warren Brewster

Jay Warren Brewster, son of Ted and Shirley Brewster, and husband of Mendy Sue Chamberlain passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. Jay had been in a coma three days before his death.

Jay is preceded in death by an older sister, Wendy who was Jay’s best friend while children.

Jay is survived by his wife, Mendy; parents, Ted and Shirley Brewster; stepson, Dillon; stepdaughter Aingeal; brothers Ted Brewster of Colorado, Chad Brewster of Utah, and Ray Brewster (Jay’s twin) of California; sisters Tammy Lofton of California and Teri Toro of Utah.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the Westridge LDS Chapel, 415 Westridge Dr., St. George, Utah.

Robert “Bob” Powers

Marjorie “Jackie” Donovan

Marjorie “Jackie” Donovan,79, died in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sunday, March 2, 2014. She was born in Douglas, Wyo. to Pascal and Ruby (Brow) Holloway on July 22, 1934.

Jackie spent her early years on her grandmothers ranch where she attended a one room school house where her grandmother taught.

Her parents moved to Butte, Mont. where she met and married Robert “Buck” Donovan. They led an interesting life living in various mining communities throughout the western United States. Buck went to work at the Nevada Test Site and they lived many years in Las Vegas. When Buck retired they made their home in Lakeview.

Jackie enjoyed crocheting, knitting, painting, woodworking, traveling and was a notorious collector of numerous and various objects. Jackie believed her greatest accomplishment and pride was in her family. Her family life centered around the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. She was loved by her children’s friends who came to just talk or get advise. After Buck’s death, she moved to Las Vegas to be with her daughter Jolene and son-in-law Allan. She always felt her home was in Lakeview.

Jackie was preceded in death by husband, Buck; sons, Robert and David Donovan; brothers, Jim and Mike Holloway and sisters, Maria Adams and Debbie Acuna.

She is survived by children, Jackie and Gregg Eadie, Jean Donovan and Diana Shaw, Jolene and Allan Shabet, Jerlyn Donovan and Kathy Donovan; brother, James Holloway; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Socorro Holloway; sister, Vickie Griswold; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at the St. de Sales Catholic Church in Las Vegas on Thursday, March 6, 2014 and a grave side service was held at the Sunset Park Cemetery in Lakeview on Monday, March 10, 2014.

Mary Roseanna Burnett Heavilin

Mary Roseanna Burnett Heavilin, 95, passed away at home, peacefully, in her sleep on Monday, March 10, 2014.

Mary was the fifth child of nine children of Stewart Lester and Rosa Bell Beyers Burnett. She was born May 11, 1918 in Orland, Calif. After Mary was born the family moved to a farm on Miller Island, near Klamath Falls, where Mary grew up. Mary attended school at Midland.

Mary met Oral Ralph Heavilin (Slim) while he was working at a Safeway Store in Klamath Falls. After a short romance and courtship they married on Sept. 12, 1937. The newly weds lived in Klamath Falls where they built their dream home. While living in Klamath Falls they were blessed with three children: Danny, Dolores and Jack.

In 1956 Mary and Oral (Slim) traded their home in Klamath Falls for a ranch on the Westside, near Lakeview, where they raised sheep and cattle. Oral and Mary worked the ranch and also ran the meat department for the Oregon Food Store (Mayfair). Oral was the butcher and Mary worked the counter and wrapped meat.

In 1967 they sold their ranch on Westside and bought a ranch in Fort Rock. Mary and Slim worked side by side on the Fort Rock Ranch (701) raising cattle and growing alfalfa hay.

In her life time, Mary was involved with 4-H, Home extension, PTA and the Cowbells. Mary was a very outgoing, friendly and caring person, and it can be said that she never met a stranger.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Slim, parents, and five of her brothers and sisters.

Mary is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Danny and Pat Heavilin of Arcata, Calif.; Jack and Cheril Heavilin of Fort Rock; and daughter and son-in-law Dolores and Arvid Freiberg of Springfield.

There will be a grave side service held at the Fort Rock Cemetery, Fort Rock on Saturday, April 5, 2014  at 1 p.m.

Jack Gottschalk

Jack Gottschalk, of Myrtle Point, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 at his home with family at his side.

Jack was born Jan. 23, 1920 in Bellingham, Wash., to Fred and Josephine Gottschalk.  He married Mary Lou Wilson Dec. 27, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  They lived in Hawaii, Alaska, and California until Mary’s death Jan. 10, 1994, after which Jack moved to Lakeview. There he made many friends and felt a real part of the community.   He moved regretfully from Lakeview to live in a more moderate climate where he could play golf most every day, which he did, happily!

Jack entered the Navy as an Airman in 1939 and was stationed on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.  He and his squadron mates strove to launch naval aircraft at the air station that morning.  He remained in the Navy until 1948 and was one of the few enlisted Chief Petty Officers to earn his wings as a Naval Aviator (Chief Aviation Pilot).  From there, he piloted his father’s fishing boat to Sitka Alaska to commercial fish in 1949.  He later became a carpenter and built houses in Sitka.  In the late 1950s he changed careers to become an Air Traffic Controller with what was then the Civil Aviation Agency (CAA) and worked in Anchorage, King Salmon, and Fairbanks, Alaska as a controller.  He transferred to California in 1967 and retired from the FAA in 1974.

Surviving Jack are his son John Gottschalk(CDR US Navy – Retired) of Tacoma, Wash.;  daughters, Valerie Gottschalk of Anderson Calif., Barbara Valdez (R.N.) of Termo Calif.; Brothers Fred and Hugo Gottschalk of Bellingham, Wash.; sister Helen Ebright of Bellingham Wash., grandchildren, Tara Marion (R.N.) of Sacramento Calif., John Giersdorf (Staff Sgt. US Army – Retired) of Sierra Vista Ariz., William Giersdorf of Anderson Calif., Gabriel Giersdorf of Plymouth, N.C., Sean, Kerry, Clare, and Mark Gottschalk of Portstewart, Northern Ireland; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Zilla Lee Pernoll

Zilla Lee Pernoll (nee: Elder), 92, died at the Lake District Hospital on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

She was born on the family ranch in Summer Lake on May 9, 1921.  Her mother was Zilla L. Elder and her father Lester E. Elder. She attended the Ana River School and Paisley High School.

Lee met the love of her life, Martin V. Pernoll, when he visited the Lakeview Hospital as she was recovering from a fractured back suffered in an automobile accident. Martin passed away in 1997, the 58th year of their marriage. The marriage resulted in two children, Alta Lee MacMillan and Martin L. Pernoll, MD.

Lee lived nearly her entire life on the family ranch, and while active in all phases of the operation, she particularly enjoyed anything that involved being on horseback.  Her spirit was that of a pioneer and she passed her stewardship and love of the land on to her descendants.

Lee was predeceased by her husband, Martin; parents; son-in-law Richard MacMillan; daughter-in-law Marcia Pernoll; older half-siblings, Alda McDowell, Sheldon Moss and Milton Moss; younger sister, Ellazan Pike (George) and nephew, Dean Moss (Dolly).

She is survived by her son Martin L. Pernoll, daughter Alta Lee MacMillan, grandchildren, Kristin Hinson, JD (Jon, MD) of Charlotte, N.C., Martin W. Pernoll (Emily Caroline) of Santa Monica, Calif., Gregg MacMillan, JD (Kimberly, JD) of San Francisco, Calif. and Scott MacMillan, JD (Shawn, JD) of Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Manzano, Christopher Manzano, Elizabeth Pernoll, Gillian Lee Pernoll, Chase MacMillan, Trevor McMillan, Lani MacMillan and Zoe McMillan. The nephews and nieces she was closest to; Richard Moss (Jann) of Bend, Gerald Pike (Anna) of Lakeview, Merilee Richardson (Bob) of Lakeview, William McDowell (Maggie) of Santa Clarita, Calif. and Bonnie Schaffer (Larry) of Anchorage, Alaska.

A funeral service was held at the Summer Lake Christian Fellowship Church on Monday, March 17, 2014 followed by committal in the Summer Lake Cemetery.

Roy G. Anderson

Roy G. Anderson, 85, died at his Care Center in Bend on Thursday, March 13, following a lengthy illness.

Roy was born Sept. 16, 1928 in Fort Bidwell, Calif. to Martin and Nellie (Godfrey) Anderson.

Roy was raised and educated in Plush. He was married to Darlene Bass in Reno, June 26, 1948. The couple ranched and lived in Plush, following their marriage.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife Darlene who died Dec. 29, 2011.

Roy is survived by his sons Tom Anderson of Plush and Jerry Anderson of Wilsonville, daughter and son-in-law Diana and Perry Watson of Plush, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

There will be a private internment and a celebration of Life service will be announced at a later time.

Bernice Alves

Bernice Alves celebrated her 94th birthday March 9, with several members of her family, then passed away the next morning March 10, in Klamath Falls.

Bernice was born on March 9, 1920 at home in Half Moon Bay, CA to Manuel Silva and Mary Youngston Silva. Following graduation from Half Moon Bay High School, she married Gregory James Alves.

Bernice lived the majority of her life in Half Moon Bay, where she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Pillar, a member of the UPEC and SPRIC Portuguese fraternal lodges, and a past queen of the Holy Ghost Festival. Bernice lived an active life enjoying baseball, hunting trips, traveling, weekly card games with friends, country line dancing, spending hours watching her sons, grandsons and great-grandsons participating in team roping and other rodeo events. Bernice voluntarily decided not to drive about a year ago and lived independently until the last six months of her life.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Manual and Mary Silva, husband Gregory James Alves, son Jimmy Alves, Lakeview, brothers Lawrence and Walter Silva, sister Annie Azevado and second husband Manual Garcia.

Bernice is survived by sons Bob (Sue) Alves, Klamath Falls; Tony (Kathie) Alves, Alturas; brother Ernie Silva, Fremont, Calif.; daughter-in-law Sue Alves, Lakeview; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces.

Graveside services will be held March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Half Moon Bay Cemetery with a celebration of life and luncheon following at the small IDES Hall in Half Moon Bay.

Ramona Jewell Lake

Ramona Jewell Lake, 81, of Sweet Home passed away Thursday, March 20.

She was born May 22, 1932 in  Pine Valley, Okla. to Lendle Carl and Ida May (Pugh) Story.

She lived in Sprague River from 1941 to 1948 then moved to Lakeview. She moved to Sweet Home in 2005.

Ramona married Robbie G. Lake on December 26, 1950. She was baptized March 24, 2002 at Christian Life Center Church of God by Reverend Wayne Breshears.

Her greatest joy was her family and she especially loved to cook and bake for them at holidays and other gatherings. She enjoyed spring and summer the most, spending her time outside tending to her flowers and garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robbie Lake in 2013, and her brother Bud Story in 1996.

Ramona is survived by son William “Ron” and daughter-in-law Lois Lake of Sweet Home; daughter Gwen and son-in-law Mike Lindsey; brother Ted and his wife Melinda Story of Deming, N.M. sisters Charlene Carnini of Weed, Calif., Lenda Cossey of Independence;  grandsons Levi and his family Jennifer, Alexa and Ryan Lindsey of Albany; Gabe and his family Amanda, Gage Lindsey of Prineville; granddaughters Allison and her family Ryan, Ava and Quinn Padua, Courtney Lake and her son Tanner Richards, Olivia and her husband Zac Cochran, all of Sweet Home.

A Memorial service will be held Friday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home.

Elrene Gay Wallace

Elrene Gay Wallace, 75, died at the Lake District Hospital on Friday, April 4, 2014.

She was born to Samuel and Wilma (Roberts) Sweeney in Lake City, Calif. on Nov. 12, 1938. She grew up in Fort Bidwell, Calif., where she attended elementary school and then completed her education at Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville.

On April 3, 1954, she and Erlyn Wallace ran off to Reno and got married. She traveled for a number of years with Erlyn as he followed his profession as a heavy equipment operator in construction. In 1975 they decided to make their home permanently in Lakeview.

Elrene’s work experience was primarily as a cook and waitress. Some of the places she worked were Jerry’s Restaurant, the bowling alley in Alturas, Mom’s Corner Cafe in Lakeview and Burn’s Brothers in Winnemucca. She thoroughly enjoyed dancing (especially with Erlyn) and playing pinochle.

Elrene was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Sweeney and son-in-law, Buck Cartwright.

lrene is survived her son Jim Wallace of Alturas, Calif., daughters Debbie Wallace of Pendleton, Sue Cartwright of Lakeview and Lisa Wallace of Lakeview; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Sandy Blake of Henderson, Nev.;  brother Floyd Sweeney,brothers and sisters-in-law Merril and Dorothy Sweeney, Benny and Arlene Sweeney, Sammy and Barb Sweeney, Dallas and Della Sweeney, Leslie and Onalee Sweeney; grandchildren Jason Davis, Jeff Wallace, Jeremy Seeley, Jauna Davis, Rick Cartwright, Brady Faircloth, Celie Faircloth, Briana Dolan, Lacey Conger, Colter Conger, Karrie Brister, nine great-grandchildren and close cousin Bonnie Barr.

A funeral service was held at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. with the committal in the Fort Bidwell Cemetery on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m..
