Christine L. Thomas, 79, passed from this life on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 after a long illness.

She was born to Harold M. Langslet and Hazel G. Roberts Langslet in Lakeview, on Feb. 7,1935. Christine grew up in southern Oregon, a bright student who made it her cause to raise funds to bring the first Disaster Car to Lake County. In 1951, she also was named Oregon’s top Civil Air Patrol cadet.

She was a Daly Scholarship recipient, majoring in medical technology at Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Falls. At college, she met David L. Thomas, the football team captain who’d been recruited to play for OTI from Ohio. They married the day after Christine graduated, in 1955.

Dave’s career as a government contractor kept the young couple on the move. They lived in at least a half-dozen states and Germany, and had three children: Christy, Cynthia and David H. Thomas. Christine made the moves seem effortless, setting up households, volunteering at the kids’ schools, befriending neighbors and winning bowling trophies everywhere they went. The family traveled extensively, but always made time to get back to Lakeview for long summer visits, class reunions and Round-Ups.

They finally settled in Boise, Idaho, in the mid-1970s. Christine worked as a medical technologist at St. Alphonsus Hospital, then in the attendance office at Borah High School. Dave had a successful second career in insurance and was the boxing manager/trainer of World Cruiserweight Champion Kenny Keene.

Christine remembered everyone’s anniversaries and birthdates, kept an immaculate home and was the quick-witted life of any gathering. She sang like an angel in many church choirs and was a talented artist and poet.

Phyllis Ruth Carter, 64. ended her battle with cancer on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 at the RiverStone Hospice House in Billings, Mont., surrounded by limitless friends and family. She was born in Lakeview on Dec. 3, 1950. As far as we are concerned she won her battle with cancer and is now laughing and smiling in spite of it all.

Phyllis was a mother, horse lover, teacher, florist and an active member of Hope United Methodist Church. She was “Nonnie” to her grandson Gabriel with whom she had a very special bond. She supported and loved the arts, especially photography and the local theater where she spent many hours volunteering.  She was a true pioneer woman in more ways than one. She took care of her ten and a half acre home for 20 plus years and paved the way in unconditional care for others. For example, finding housing and healthcare for a homeless man she befriended, and spending hours taking photos of high school seniors who could not afford professional Senior Portraits. Those who knew her will have many more examples; she was an unmatchable woman.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don Carter and father Jim Howard.

Phyllis is survived by her mother Dorothy Howard of Lakeview; son Darrell Carter; daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Dawn, Dan and Gabriel Nickerson of Billings; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Melinda Howard of Lakeview; sister and brother-in-law Patty and Ross Westgate of Paisley; brothers-in-law, Bose and Nancy Carter and David Carter of Northern California Phyllis is also survived by many extended family and friends.

Mike was born in Lakeview on Nov. 26, 1941 to Clarence and Jessie (Willis) McClain.  He grew up in New Pine Creek where he received his elementary education at Kelly Creek School.  He completed his education when he graduated from Lakeview High School with the class of 1959.  Shortly after graduation he enlisted into the U. S. Army and served honorably from 1959 to 1963 in the Army Engineers.

Mike’s work experience was quite varied.  His years of ranch work and long haul truck driving caused him to make many moves to follow the jobs, but he always ended up back home in Lakeview.

Mike was a master craftsman when it came to wood working.  The rifle stocks he made were true works of art and the fiddle he made  was absolutely beautiful. He enjoyed doing crafts, but his real passion was fishing.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Kerry and Karen McClain of Lakeview; son, Devin McClain of Amarillo, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Michel and Kevin Kaley of Hazen, N.D.; brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Judi McClain of Kotzebue, Alaska; sister and brother-in-law, Mona and Lewis Cain of Fallon, Nev.; sister, Carol Porter of Klamath Falls; very special friend, Meta Valentine of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial potluck dinner was served at the Lakeview Elk’s Lodge on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m..
Contributions in Mike’s memory may be made to the Lakeview Disaster Unit, PO Box 1007, Lakeview or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
