Laura Shine, 87, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2015 in Lakeview.
She was born in Lakeview on Aug. 30, 1927 to Irish parents, Mary O’Keeffe Verling and Francis Kavanaugh Verling.
Laura spent her early years growing up on the KV Bar Ranch west of town. When she was three years old her father died of tick fever and a few years later her family moved into Lakeview to the house on E street. She lived through The Great Depression and saw four of her brothers go off to serve in World War II.
She graduated high school in 1946. Laura attended Armstrong Business College in Berkley, Calif. and received a degree in bookkeeping. She lived and worked in the Bay Area for several years before returning home to Lakeview where she worked as a bookkeeper for Fremont Sawmill.
Laura married John Shine on Feb. 15, 1958. They moved to Adel to ranch and raised six kids. She was a 4-H leader and a member of St. Richard Church. She never missed an Adel school event and ended up working there after her children were grown. She was one of the Adel Moms that shaped the lives of a generation of kids.
As a kid, Laura loved sports and she remained an active person her whole life. She walked every day and even in her late seventies you could find her doing laps around Western Villa on her three-wheeled bike. She loved music, dancing and all things Irish. Family was everything to Laura and she was a constant, irreplaceable presence in her children’s lives.
During her final years she was in the excellent care of Jody Johnston and Lesa Cahill.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John; mother, Mary; father, Francis; step-father Pat Fitzgerald; brothers, Walter, George, Francis, Morgan and Bill; sister, Mary; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bridie Shine and Richard Kiely.
